Decided to hold off on putting up a Padres series recap and just make it a whole week, but man did this week take a turn for the worse.
After breaking out the sticks and taking the first two games in San Diego, Francisco Liriano took the hill on Wednesday looking to sweep the Friars. He allowed a bunt single in the first, and that was the only knock the Padres got. And yet the Bucs still managed to lose despite one-hitting them. Liriano lasted only 5 innings and the bullpen held San Diego scoreless/hitless, but they still came out on top 3-2. 9 walks will do you in.

The Brewers were waiting for the Pirates when they returned home on Friday night, and the Bucs gave them quite the shellacking. Cutch and Jordy each went deep to power the offense to 15 runs. Even more encouraging were the 6 walks (a couple with the bases loaded) that Pirate hitters drew. Really a statement win for the Bucs against the first-place Brew Crew.
Unfortunately, the Bucs seemed to have left everything they had on the field Friday night. 5 errors and a late Brewers rally on Saturday led to a 9-3 loss, and Yovani Gallardo tossed 7 scoreless innings on Sunday afternoon to lead Milwaukee to the series win. Jeff Locke, however, was excellent in his first start since being recalled. He allowed just three hits in 7 innings, but Gallardo was nearly perfect.
To top it all off, Gerrit Cole went on the 15-day DL with shoulder fatigue and will miss at least two starts. Fun.
Cubs and Marlins coming up this week. Two teams that the Pirates *should* be able to handle, but this team is so volatile that who really knows what could happen.
